A bugbear isn't a real insect or beast. It once referred to a frightening creature in old tales, but today it usually means a persistent source of worry or irritation. Think of it as that one thing that always gets under your skin. Maybe public speaking is your bugbear, or perhaps it's the people who cut in line at the checkout.

In older stories, bugbears were imagined as ugly, threatening monsters used to scare children into behaving. We no longer take those stories literally, but the modern meaning still fits: a recurring fear, annoyance, or frustration that people really resent. If someone says, “That’s my bugbear,” they’re naming something they find especially bothersome.

The word "bugbear" originally meant a goblin-like monster in folklore, the kind parents used to mention to children to enforce obedience. Parents might have said a child would be taken by one if they misbehaved, so the word picked up its associations with dread. In modern English, the meaning shifted from a real creature to a mental one: something that repeatedly triggers annoyance, discomfort, or fear.

A bugbear is usually not a single crisis but a recurring pressure point. It can be a work issue (“Dealing with paperwork is my biggest bugbear”), a recurring habit you struggle with (“Procrastination is a real bugbear for me”), or a pet peeve that keeps rising up (“Loud chewing is a huge bugbear of mine”).

The key part is persistence. It’s not just “I don’t like that”; it’s “that keeps bothering me over and over.” A bugbear often feels both irritating and emotionally sticky, because it seems hard to solve and keeps returning. So even though we no longer fear the creature itself, everyone has their own bugbears: nagging concerns and irritations that quietly shape daily life.
