Bronchitis refers to the inflammation of the bronchial tubes, the pathways that carry air to and from your lungs. It's a common condition that can cause discomfort and breathing difficulties. There are two main types: acute and chronic.

• Acute bronchitis usually develops after a viral infection like a cold or flu. Symptoms typically include coughing (often producing mucus), wheezing, shortness of breath, fatigue, and sometimes a mild fever. It generally lasts for a few weeks and resolves on its own with rest and supportive care. Think of it as your lungs' way of fighting off an invader.

• Chronic bronchitis, however, is a more serious condition. It's defined as a persistent cough with mucus production lasting for at least three months in two consecutive years. This type is often caused by long-term exposure to irritants like cigarette smoke, dust, or pollution. Chronic bronchitis is a key component of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

The word "bronchitis" comes from the Greek words "bronchos," meaning windpipe, and "itis," which means inflammation. You might hear it used in phrases like: "She's been sidelined with bronchitis," or "He's recovering from a bout of acute bronchitis." Doctors often diagnose bronchitis by listening to your lungs with a stethoscope and asking about your symptoms. While usually not life-threatening, both types of bronchitis can be unpleasant and require attention—especially if symptoms worsen or don't improve.
