The term "bollworm" refers not to a single insect, but to several species of moths, most notably Helicoverpa zea (the cotton bollworm) and Helicoverpa armigera (the Old World bollworm), with several related species in other genera in some regions. These moths are major agricultural pests with a global reach, known for their destructive larvae – the actual "bollworms."

The life cycle begins when female moths lay tiny eggs on host plants. When the eggs hatch, the caterpillars feed voraciously. They're particularly fond of developing cotton seed pods (or "bolls"), where larvae can burrow inside and feed on seeds and fibers – hence the name "bollworm." This damage can drastically reduce cotton yield and fiber quality, with major effects on textile production.

However, bollworms aren't limited to cotton. They are polyphagous pests, meaning they feed on a wide variety of crops including tomatoes, corn, soybeans, peppers, tobacco, and many more. This broad host range makes controlling them particularly challenging.

Farmers employ various strategies to manage bollworm infestations, including the use of pesticides (though resistance is becoming an increasing problem), biological control methods like introducing predatory insects, and Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a naturally occurring bacterium toxic to caterpillars. They also use genetically modified cotton that expresses Bt toxins to help suppress attacks.

The economic impact of bollworms is significant. Outbreaks can lead to substantial crop losses, affecting farmers' livelihoods and impacting the global supply chain for cotton and other agricultural products. Understanding the lifecycle and behavior of these pests is crucial for developing effective and sustainable control strategies.
