The story of biphenyl begins in coal tar, where it was first isolated in the 19th century. Today, while PCBs are heavily regulated, biphenyl itself continues to be used in a variety of legitimate applications, including as an intermediate in manufacturing pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, and high-performance polymers. It is also found in specialized lubricants where thermal stability is crucial.
