Description

You've probably shouted "Bingo!" with glee when you filled your card in that classic game—but did you know the word has a bit of an accidental history? While the game is a descendant of a 16th-century Italian lottery called Lo Giuoco del Lotto d'Italia, the name "Bingo" itself is an Americanism. It reportedly evolved from "Beano," a game where players used dried beans to mark their numbers. Legend has it that a player got so excited they yelled "Bingo!" by mistake, and the name stuck!

Today, "Bingo!" is most famously associated with the game where players mark off squares until they achieve a winning pattern. But it's also used more broadly to express sudden success or recognition. "She found the error in the code! Bingo!" Or, if you finally figure out a tricky puzzle, you might exclaim "Bingo!" It's a little burst of celebratory energy used whenever something clicks into place.
