Its primary function is to break down fats during digestion, allowing your body to absorb nutrients. Without bile, digesting fatty foods would be difficult and lead to discomfort. Doctors might talk about "bile duct obstruction" or "gallstones affecting bile flow" when discussing medical conditions related to this process.

However, the word "bile" has a much richer history and is frequently used metaphorically. For centuries, it has been associated with intense negative emotions – particularly bitterness, resentment, and anger. This connection stems from ancient Greek medicine, which believed that imbalances in bodily "humors" (including yellow bile) influenced temperament. An excess of yellow bile was thought to make someone irritable, choleric, and prone to outbursts.

Therefore, when we say someone is "full of bile," or that their words are dripping with bile, we don't mean they're literally producing extra digestive fluid! We mean they are expressing intense negativity, often laced with scorn or hatred. A character in a novel might "struggle to suppress the bile rising in her throat" when confronted with injustice, or a critic might write a review so scathing it seems "written in bile."

The imagery is powerful: a bitter, acrid substance representing deeply unpleasant feelings.
