The bellbird (Anthornis melanura) is a medium-sized songbird native to New Zealand, famed for its extraordinarily beautiful and complex vocalizations that resemble the ringing of bells—hence the name. These birds are found across New Zealand's North Island, South Island, Stewart Island, and several offshore islands, inhabiting dense forests, scrubland, and even suburban gardens.

While their song is remarkable, bellbirds are relatively modest in appearance. They possess olive-green plumage, with males sporting a subtle purplish tint on their heads and darker wings, while females are a slightly duller olive-brown with a thin white stripe across the cheek. Their song is what truly sets them apart; it is not a single tone, but rather a cascading series of whistles, chimes, and warbles that varies significantly between regions, effectively creating local dialects.

Beyond its enchanting melody, the bellbird plays an essential ecological role as a nectar feeder and seed disperser. They are often seen performing aerial gymnastics to reach nectar in flowers like kōwhai and flax. Historically significant to Māori culture, the bellbird (known as korimako) is admired for its vocal prowess; a great orator is sometimes compared to it through the phrase he koekoeā ki te rangi, he korimako ki te whenua (a cuckoo in the sky, a bellbird on the land).

Sadly, like many New Zealand birds, bellbirds have faced threats from habitat loss and introduced predators. However, thanks to intensive conservation efforts and predator-free sanctuaries, their populations are recovering.
