The term baud originates from the name of French telegraph pioneer Jean-Maurice-Émile Baudot, and historically referred to the rate at which telegraph signals were sent – essentially, how many signal changes (like on/off pulses) occurred per second. While often used interchangeably with "bits per second" (bps), baud technically refers to symbols transmitted per second, while bps measures the number of bits transmitted.

In older communication systems, each symbol represented one bit, so baud and bps were equivalent. However, modern technology allows for more complex encoding schemes where a single symbol can represent multiple bits. This means the baud rate can be lower than the bps rate, allowing for faster data transmission over the same physical connection.

You'll rarely hear "baud" used in everyday conversation about internet speed these days (we usually talk about Mbps or Gbps). However, it remains a fundamental unit in telecommunications engineering and is still relevant when discussing serial communication protocols, modems, and other digital signaling systems. For example, a modem might operate at 9600 baud, meaning it can send 9600 signal changes per second.
