Bathos (pronounced BAY-thoss) refers to the sudden, often unintentional shift from a serious or elevated tone to a commonplace one; it's essentially an anticlimax that feels jarring and deflating. It comes from the Greek word meaning "depth," but in literary terms, it describes a plummet down in style – a fall from grandeur into triviality.

Historically, bathos was considered a rhetorical fault—something to be avoided by skilled writers. Critics of the 18th century (like Samuel Johnson) were particularly sensitive to it, seeing it as a sign of poor taste or declining literary standards. They believed that true eloquence maintained consistency in tone and style.

However, later writers began to use bathos intentionally for comedic or satirical effect. By deliberately juxtaposing the sublime with the ridiculous, they could create humor, highlight hypocrisy, or expose the absurdity of human pretensions. Think of a melodramatic scene undercut by a mundane detail – that's bathos at work.

You might find it in literature ("After all this, he merely coughed and died"), film (a tense action sequence interrupted by slapstick), or even everyday conversation. A heartfelt confession followed by a request for pizza could be considered an example of bathos. It's the unexpected drop that leaves you feeling… well, slightly off-kilter.

So, while traditionally seen as a flaw, bathos can be a powerful tool—a way to disrupt expectations, create humor, or reveal deeper truths through ironic contrast.
