Imagine a wagon rolling down a dusty road. What keeps the wheels aligned and lets them spin? That's an axle! An axle is a central shaft that supports or mounts rotating parts, most commonly wheels. It is the backbone of many things that roll—from bicycles and cars to skateboards and hand carts. But "axle" isn't only about mechanics. Figuratively, it can mean the key point on which something turns or depends. A strong family bond can feel like the center around which a person's life revolves. Think of it as the sturdy core that everything else turns around.

An axle is a sturdy, usually cylindrical shaft that carries a wheel or pair of wheels and allows them to rotate. In vehicles and machines, it can also help transmit torque from the drivetrain to the wheels, while in other systems it mainly carries weight and keeps wheels aligned. Think of the axle as the shaft passing through a wheel hub and bearings, not the wheel itself.

There are different types depending on how they are used. A live axle (also called a drive axle) transfers power to the wheels, and is common in powered rear-axle setups. A dead axle (non-driven axle) mainly supports weight, such as on trailers or certain heavy-duty systems. Axles may be rigid or split, solid or hollow, and are found in bicycles, cars, buses, carts, and machinery.

The word is also used figuratively. If someone says a person, idea, or value is the "axle" of a team, they mean it is the central force the rest of that team revolves around. In this sense, the axle is the point of connection and stability that keeps things balanced and moving in the right direction.
