However, atmosphere also describes the mood, feeling, or tone of a place, situation, or work of art. This is a more figurative use of the word, drawing on the idea that just as air surrounds us physically, emotions and feelings surround us emotionally. A room can have a "romantic atmosphere" created by dim lighting and soft music. A political debate might be described as having a "heated atmosphere."
