An atheroma is a specific type of lesion that forms within the arterial wall, specifically in the layer known as the intima. It begins when "bad" cholesterol (LDL) penetrates the artery wall and becomes trapped. Your body sends white blood cells to clean up the mess, but they often get overwhelmed and die, piling up to form a soft, lipid-rich core. To the naked eye, this core looks like a soft, yellow paste.
This appearance gives the word its history. "Atheroma" is derived from the Greek word athērē, meaning "gruel" or "porridge," and the suffix -oma (swelling). The early anatomists chose this name because the cheesy, fatty substance inside the arterial plaque reminded them of porridge.
Important Usage Note: Some dermatology texts also use "atheroma" to describe a sebaceous or epidermoid skin cyst, because those cysts can have cheesy contents. That sense is less common in cardiovascular contexts, where "atheroma" primarily refers to fatty arterial plaque that can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
