Ascidians are marine invertebrate animals belonging to the subphylum Tunicata (the tunicates). Don't let "invertebrate" scare you—it just means they don't have a backbone! What is remarkable about ascidians is their unusual life cycle and evolutionary significance.

The larval stage of an ascidian is free-swimming, possessing a notochord (a flexible rod supporting the body) and resembling a tadpole. This is where things get interesting: it's this larval form that reveals their close relationship to vertebrates—we all have notochords at some point in our development! Once the larva finds a suitable surface, it undergoes metamorphosis, attaching itself permanently and losing its tail and most of its nervous system. The adult ascidian is essentially a sac-like filter feeder, drawing water in through one siphon (opening) and expelling it through another after extracting nutrients.

While they might seem simple, ascidians play an important role in marine ecosystems. They can sometimes be considered fouling organisms on boats and structures, but are also studied extensively by biologists interested in the evolution of chordates (the group that includes vertebrates).
