The term "armyworm" isn’t a single species, but a common name for the caterpillars of several moth species that share a similar habit: they feed in heavy numbers and may move on en masse when food runs out. These caterpillars are typically dull-colored—ranging from greenish to brownish—and can grow to an inch or more long. They’re the larval stage of moths in the Noctuidae family, with species like the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) being particularly widespread and destructive.

The "army" part comes from their habit of advancing in dense groups as they strip an area and push onward, creating the eerie impression of an invading force. They’re voracious eaters, feeding on leaves and tender plant parts (and, for some species, developing ears or seed heads). This makes them major agricultural pests, causing significant economic losses in crops such as corn, cotton, sorghum, alfalfa, and many vegetables.

Armyworm outbreaks are often linked to weather patterns—warm, humid conditions can favor their reproduction—and in many regions they spread quickly as moths migrate and lay eggs. Farmers use a variety of methods to control armyworms, including monitoring, targeted insecticides, biological controls (such as Bacillus thuringiensis or natural predators/parasitoids), and cultural practices like crop rotation and residue management. Gardeners might handpick them, protect young plants, or use organic options designed for caterpillars.

So, while the name evokes images of miniature warfare, an armyworm is simply a hungry caterpillar with a knack for traveling in large groups—and a talent for causing trouble in fields and gardens everywhere.
