- Ideational Apraxia: Trouble understanding the concept of a multi-step task—like making a sandwich—and sequencing the actions correctly. They might know how to use each tool, but not when.
- Constructional Apraxia: Difficulty with tasks that require spatial organization, such as drawing, copying designs, or assembling objects (and it can overlap with broader visuospatial difficulties).
- Orofacial (Buccofacial) Apraxia: Difficulty planning and coordinating non-speech movements of the face and mouth on command, such as licking the lips, coughing, or blowing a kiss.
- Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS): A motor speech disorder where children have difficulty planning and coordinating the movements needed for clear speech.
Apraxia often results from damage to specific areas of the brain—typically after a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or neurodegenerative disease. In some cases (such as CAS), it's developmental rather than acquired. It can significantly impact daily life, making simple tasks like getting dressed, preparing food, or even brushing your teeth incredibly challenging.
Treatment usually involves occupational therapy and speech therapy to help individuals relearn movements, develop compensatory strategies, and improve their ability to plan and execute actions. While there's no cure, therapy can greatly enhance the quality of life for those living with apraxia.
