"Antilock" (often written anti-lock) describes a system designed to prevent something from becoming rigidly fixed or locked, most commonly referring to antilock braking systems (ABS) in vehicles. These systems are crucial safety features that can greatly improve control during emergency stops by helping you maintain steering control while braking hard.

Think about what happens when you slam on the brakes—especially on a slippery surface. Without ABS, your wheels can lock up, meaning they stop rotating entirely. This causes the tires to skid across the road, and you lose the ability to steer. An antilock system works by rapidly applying and releasing the brakes multiple times per second. This pulsing action prevents the wheels from locking while still allowing them to slow down effectively. You might feel a slight vibration in the brake pedal when ABS is engaged—that's normal!
