It releases histamine to fight off the perceived danger. While helpful in some situations, an overreaction can lead to those annoying allergy symptoms.
Antihistamines work by blocking histamine receptors—essentially preventing histamine from binding to cells and triggering that allergic response. There are two main types: first-generation antihistamines (like Benadryl), which can cause drowsiness, and second-generation antihistamines (like Claritin or Zyrtec), which are less likely to make you sleepy. Most allergy medications you see over the counter are H1 antihistamines; a different class, called H2 antihistamines, is used mainly to reduce stomach acid.
Antihistamines aren't a cure for allergies, but they effectively manage the symptoms. They're commonly used to treat seasonal allergies (hay fever), insect bites or stings, skin rashes, and hives, and some (especially first-generation antihistamines) are also used for motion sickness. In a severe allergic reaction, an antihistamine may help with itching or hives, but it does not replace epinephrine, which is the first-line treatment for anaphylaxis.
