The creation of antibodies is a complex process involving B cells (a type of white blood cell). When a B cell encounters an antigen, it activates and multiplies; many of its descendants become plasma cells that churn out massive amounts of antibodies. Others become memory cells, allowing the immune system to quickly produce antibodies if the same antigen appears again in the future—this is how vaccines work!
You'll often hear about antibody tests used to determine if someone has been exposed to a particular disease or if they have developed immunity after vaccination. These tests measure the level of specific antibodies in the blood.
So, whether it's fighting off a common cold or providing long-term protection against serious diseases, antibodies are essential proteins that play a vital role in keeping us healthy—the silent guardians of our internal fortress.
