"Antiangiogenic" describes substances or treatments that inhibit angiogenesis—the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing ones. While angiogenesis is a normal and essential process in wound healing and development, it is often hijacked by diseases. Tumors, for example, need a massive supply of oxygen and nutrients to grow, so they chemically stimulate angiogenesis to create their own network of blood vessels.

The word combines "anti-" (against) and "angiogenesis" (blood vessel formation). Therefore, an antiangiogenic substance actively works against this plumbing process.

In medical contexts, particularly oncology, antiangiogenic drugs are designed to block the chemical signals that tell the body to grow these new vessels. Instead of attacking cancer cells directly, these drugs "starve" the tumor by cutting off its lifeline. This can slow tumor growth, may help limit metastasis (spread to other parts of the body), and can make other treatments like chemotherapy more effective. While most commonly associated with cancer, antiangiogenic treatments are also widely used in ophthalmology to treat eye conditions like wet age-related macular degeneration, where abnormal blood vessels grow in the eye and damage vision.

You might encounter "antiangiogenic" when reading about medical breakthroughs or targeted drug therapies. For example: "Researchers are investigating novel antiangiogenic compounds derived from marine sponges." Or, "Bevacizumab is an antiangiogenic antibody used to treat certain types of lung and colon cancer."

So, while a complex term, "antiangiogenic" essentially describes the ability to disrupt the blood supply that fuels disease—offering a promising avenue for modern medicine.
