The word annalist refers to someone who writes annals—chronological records of events year by year. It is more specific than simply being a historian; an annalist is focused on the detailed recording of happenings in sequential order. The term derives from the Latin word "annales," which originally referred to yearly accounts kept by Roman officials.

Historically, annalists were often associated with religious institutions like monasteries, where monks diligently documented events for preservation and posterity. They weren't necessarily interpreting history, but rather recording it as accurately as possible. Think of them as the keepers of a timeline, meticulously noting births, deaths, battles, natural disasters, and other significant occurrences.

While less common today as a job title (modern historians often take a more analytical approach), the term still appears when discussing historical sources.
