Description

Imagine rolling dough for a pie crust. If you roll it evenly in all directions, that's isotropic—the same in every direction. But if you flatten it more in one direction than another—maybe stretching it into a rectangle—that's anisotropy. It means something behaves differently depending on which way you look at it or measure it.

Anisotropy isn't just about dough. Wood is anisotropic: it's much easier to split along the grain than across it. The way light moves through materials can be anisotropic too—some crystals transmit light differently depending on direction, creating striking optical effects. Scientists use this term a lot when studying crystals, layered materials, aligned polymers, and even how water diffuses along nerve fibers in the brain.
