Amiodarone (pronounced am-ee-OH-duh-rohn) is a powerful antiarrhythmic drug used to treat and prevent irregular heartbeats, known as arrhythmias. These can range from uncomfortable palpitations to life-threatening rhythms like ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. Amiodarone is typically prescribed by cardiologists (heart specialists) when other treatments—like lifestyle changes, procedures, or other medications—haven't been successful in controlling the arrhythmia, or when the situation is high-risk. Because it can interact with many common drugs and tends to linger in the body for a long time, starting it (and adjusting doses) is done carefully; in some serious cases, treatment is started in the hospital so the heart rhythm and side effects can be watched closely.
