Amblyopia, commonly known as "lazy eye," is a condition in which vision doesn’t develop normally in one eye (and less commonly in both) during early childhood. Often, the eye itself looks healthy, but the brain doesn’t learn to use its input properly. Instead, the brain starts to suppress or downplay the signals coming from the weaker eye and relies on the stronger one. This typically happens because the eyes are sending the brain unequal images—perhaps one eye is much more nearsighted, farsighted, or astigmatic than the other, there’s a misalignment (strabismus), or something blocks clear vision early on (such as a cataract or a droopy eyelid).

Think of it like this: your brain wants clear images. If one eye sends blurry or distorted information, the brain will start to rely more on the good eye and essentially "turn down" the input from the weaker one. Over time, this can lead to a permanent reduction in vision in the affected eye if not treated early.

Amblyopia is usually detected during routine childhood eye exams. Treatment focuses on fixing the cause (for example, correcting the prescription, treating anything that blocks vision, and sometimes aligning the eyes) and then retraining the brain to use the weaker eye—often by patching the stronger eye or using medicated drops that temporarily blur it. Early detection and intervention are crucial because amblyopia is much harder to treat later in life.

While "lazy eye" is a common term, it's important to remember that amblyopia isn't about being lazy! It's a genuine visual development issue that requires medical attention. So, if you notice a child squinting, tilting their head, or having difficulty with depth perception, it's essential to get their vision checked by an eye care professional.
