The word alveolus (pronounced al-VEE-oh-lus) refers to a small pit, socket, or hollow space that serves as a support or enclosure for something else. While it sounds complex, the concept is surprisingly common in nature and biology!

Most famously, an alveolus is the bony socket in your jawbone into which the root of a tooth fits. Dentists are very familiar with these—they're crucial for holding teeth securely in place. If you lose a tooth, the surrounding bone can resorb (shrink) because it no longer gets the stimulation that comes from a tooth sitting in that socket.

These pulmonary alveoli are incredibly important; their vast surface area allows efficient breathing. They look a bit like bunches of grapes under a microscope.
