Most commonly, it describes a vocal range or choral part that sits below soprano and typically above tenor in four-part harmony. While the word originally comes from the Latin for "high" (because it was once the highest male voice), today it usually points to the lower female part in a choir—often sung by contraltos and many mezzo-sopranos. You will also hear it attached to instruments, like the "alto saxophone," which plays in that same mellow, middle register. If you are listening to a choir and hear a harmony that adds depth and body to the melody, you are likely listening to the altos!
The word "alto" has a curious linguistic history. It stems from the Latin altus, meaning "high." This might seem confusing, as an alto singer is often the lowest female voice in a choir. This quirk exists because, centuries ago in early church music, the "alto" line was sung by men using their highest range (countertenors)—so it was literally the "high" male part.
In modern English, "alto" is almost exclusively a musical term. It refers to a voice part and the general range that goes with it (the exact notes vary by singer and repertoire, but you can think of it as roughly around F below middle C up to around F an octave above middle C). Instruments are also categorized this way; an alto flute or alto saxophone is pitched lower and sounds deeper than its soprano counterpart, providing a thick, resonant sound that bridges the gap between bass and treble.
However, the original meaning of "high" does survive in English in very specific, non-musical ways.
