Description

Imagine a lock (a protein, often an enzyme) and a key (a molecule). Usually, the key fits directly into the lock’s keyhole—the active site—where the main action happens. But what if someone slightly bends the lock while you’re trying to use the key? That’s essentially the concept of allostery. "Allosteric" describes proteins that change their shape and activity when a molecule binds to a different spot (an allosteric site), indirectly affecting what happens at the active site. It’s like a remote control for the protein, subtly adjusting how it works from a distance. This matters in biology because it’s one of the main ways cells regulate processes, turning things up or down depending on what’s happening around them.
