Airbus is the name of a major European aerospace company, and by extension it’s also the everyday name many travelers use for an airplane made by that company. So when someone says they’re flying “on an Airbus,” they usually mean the aircraft type is an Airbus model rather than a Boeing—useful shorthand when you’re looking at an airline’s fleet list or the “aircraft type” on a booking page.

Airbus began in the early 1970s as a European collaboration created to compete with American manufacturers. Over time it became known for distinctive design choices and innovations in commercial aviation, including the widespread use of fly-by-wire systems (where computers help translate pilot inputs) and increasing use of advanced materials.

You’ll often hear about specific Airbus families: the A320 series (a common short-haul workhorse), the A350 (a modern long-range jet), and the massive A380. In aviation writing you’ll also see the word used more like an adjective—“Airbus aircraft,” “Airbus fleet,” “Airbus pilot”—to mark the manufacturer.

In lowercase, airbus can occasionally show up as a generic term for a large passenger aircraft, but in modern English it most often points to the Airbus brand. Contrary to a few jokes and folk explanations, the name has nothing to do with bees: it’s simply “air” + “bus,” a nod to the idea of bus-like mass transport. So next time you’re soaring through the clouds, “Airbus” can be both a logo on the tail and a quick way of saying what kind of jet is carrying you.
