Agrarianism is a broad philosophy that champions a rural, agriculture-centered way of life as especially good for a society's social, political, and economic health. Agrarian ideas have existed for a long time, but they often become louder in periods of industrialization and urbanization, when people worry that city life and factory work are reshaping communities too quickly. Agrarianism is not simply "supporting agriculture" in a technical sense; it's the claim that farming and rural communities tend to foster independence, self-reliance, civic engagement, and a grounded moral character, qualities that can feel threatened when work becomes detached from land and local life.

In the United States, Thomas Jefferson is often treated as the classic voice of agrarianism. He imagined a republic of independent yeoman farmers (landowning citizens who worked their own land and participated actively in democratic governance). In that vision, widespread landownership and an agricultural way of life were tied to political virtue and resistance to tyranny.

But agrarianism isn't without its complexities. It can romanticize rural life and gloss over the hardships and inequalities that have existed in farming communities. It's also often criticized as nostalgic or impractical, especially in economies where most people no longer work the land.

Today, you might encounter "agrarianism" when discussing movements that defend farmers' interests, call for land reform, or push back against the social costs of industrial capitalism. Historically, that includes strands of Populism and various agrarian political movements; culturally, it shows up in "back-to-the-land" thinking (for example, in the 1960s and 1970s). It also appears in literature and art that explore themes of nature, community, and the search for a simpler or more rooted way of living. And it remains relevant to contemporary debates about food systems, sustainable agriculture, land use, and rural development.

So, while it might sound like just a fancy word for farming, agrarianism is really a set of values and arguments about what kind of work, community, and economy best support human flourishing, and the belief that the health of society is closely tied to the health of the land and the people who cultivate it.
