ageist

The term ageist describes someone who exhibits prejudice or discrimination based on a person's age. While it's most commonly associated with negative attitudes toward older people, ageism can also manifest as bias against younger generations. It operates much like other forms of prejudice – relying on stereotypes and generalizations rather than individual merit.

Ageism isn't always intentional or overt. It can be subtle, ingrained in our language (for example, phrases like "senior moment" that imply decline), media representations (a lack of diverse older characters), or institutional policies (mandatory retirement ages). A hiring manager who automatically dismisses a candidate as "overqualified" when the real concern is their age is exhibiting ageist behavior. Similarly, assuming an older person needs help with a simple task without asking is also rooted in ageism.

The consequences of ageism can be significant. It contributes to social isolation, diminished self-esteem, and even poorer health outcomes for those targeted. Challenging ageist assumptions requires conscious effort – recognizing our own biases, promoting positive portrayals of all ages, and advocating for policies that ensure equal opportunities regardless of how many candles are on someone's birthday cake. It's about valuing experience and innovation, wisdom and energy, at every stage of life.
