The word aficionado describes someone who is passionately interested in a particular activity or subject—often something pursued for pleasure, like music, food, wine, film, art, or sports. It's more than simply liking something; it usually implies informed enthusiasm: not necessarily professional expertise, but the kind of familiarity that comes from paying attention, having opinions, and keeping up with the details. While "fan" can be anyone who enjoys something, aficionado tends to sound more knowledgeable or discerning.

The term comes from Spanish (related to afición, “fondness” or “enthusiasm”), and in English it was popularized by its use around Spanish bullfighting culture. Today, it travels easily. You might meet a jazz aficionado who can name the sidemen on a classic recording, or a coffee aficionado who experiments with brewing methods and origins.

It often leans toward cultural pursuits, but you can use it for almost any serious hobbyist interest: vintage cars, antique furniture, niche video games, or even a particular author's work. And while it can sound a bit formal, it’s also used playfully—an easy way to say, “This isn’t just a passing interest for me.”
