aerogram

An aerogram (also spelled aerogramme, and sometimes called an "air letter") is a self-contained stationery form used for sending lightweight letters by airmail. While airmail services began earlier, the aerogram format became especially popular in the mid-20th century as a cost-effective way to communicate internationally. Unlike traditional letters that required a separate envelope, an aerogram consisted of a single sheet of durable, ultra-thin paper—often light blue—usually sold with postage prepaid and printed on the form, along with folding instructions. The user wrote on the unlined interior, then folded and sealed the gummed flaps to create a private packet.

The defining feature of the aerogram was its standardization: it was designed to meet strict weight limits to qualify for lower postal rates. Consequently, adding enclosures (like photos or cash) was usually prohibited. While largely replaced by instant digital communication, the aerogram represents a slower, more deliberate era of connection. Etymologically, the word blends "aero" (relating to air) with the suffix "-gram" (from the Greek gramma, "something written," as in telegram), neatly describing a written message carried on wings of air.
