An adenoma is a benign (noncancerous) tumor that develops from glandular tissue, especially glandular epithelium—the cells that form glands and the gland-like lining of some organs that produce substances such as hormones, mucus, or digestive juices. The word itself comes from the Greek "aden" meaning gland, and "-oma" denoting a tumor.

Adenomas can occur in many parts of the body but are most commonly found in the colon (where they're often called polyps), pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, and parathyroid glands. They aren't inherently dangerous; however, their location and size can sometimes cause symptoms. For example, a pituitary adenoma might disrupt hormone production leading to various health issues, or a large colonic adenoma could bleed.

Crucially, while benign, some adenomas have the potential to become cancerous over time—especially certain types in the colon—which is why doctors often recommend monitoring them closely or removing them preventively. Adenomas can also cause problems even without turning cancerous, for example by pressing on nearby tissue or (in some glands) producing too much hormone. The type of adenoma and its characteristics help determine the best course of action. For instance, a colon adenoma discovered during a routine colonoscopy might be removed during the same procedure.

So, an adenoma isn't something to panic about immediately, but it is something that requires medical attention and careful evaluation. It's a reminder that even noncancerous growths can impact health and warrant monitoring or intervention.
