Imagine your body as a carefully balanced scale. Acidosis happens when there's too much acid on one side of that scale, throwing everything off balance. It's not the same thing as heartburn; it's a serious medical condition where body fluids—especially the blood—become too acidic. Acidosis usually isn't the root problem; it's a clue that something else is going wrong. Doctors look for signs of acidosis when diagnosing and treating these underlying conditions.
Acidosis refers to excess acidity in body fluids—most critically, the blood. Our bodies maintain a very precise pH balance (around 7.35–7.45), which is essential for cells to function correctly. When this balance tips too far toward acidity, it's called acidosis. (In stricter medical language, acidosis is the process that pushes pH down; the resulting low blood pH is called acidemia.) It's like trying to build with Lego bricks in quicksand—everything becomes unstable and difficult to manage.
There are two main types of acidosis: *respiratory acidosis and metabolic acidosis*. Respiratory acidosis happens when the lungs aren't removing enough carbon dioxide (an acid-forming gas), often due to conditions like severe asthma or COPD. Metabolic acidosis, on the other hand, happens when the body makes too much acid, can't get rid of it effectively, or loses too much base (bicarbonate). This can be caused by kidney failure, uncontrolled diabetes (diabetic ketoacidosis), severe infection or shock (lactic acidosis), severe diarrhea (bicarbonate loss), or certain toxins.
Symptoms of acidosis vary depending on its severity and cause, but can include fatigue, confusion, rapid breathing, nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases, shock or coma.
Doctors diagnose acidosis through blood tests that measure pH levels, along with other indicators like bicarbonate and carbon dioxide levels. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause while also trying to restore a healthy acid-base balance—often involving oxygen therapy, medications, or even dialysis.
So, acidosis isn't something you "catch," but rather a signal that your body is struggling to maintain its delicate internal equilibrium. It's a complex condition requiring careful medical attention to identify and correct the root problem.
