absurdism

Absurdism is a philosophical and artistic idea centered on the conflict between the human need for meaning and a universe that may be indifferent, silent, or impossible to fully understand. It begins with a very human feeling: we want life to make sense, but sometimes the world answers with confusion, accident, suffering, or nothing at all.

In philosophy, absurdism is often associated with Albert Camus. It does not simply say, "Nothing matters," the way people sometimes imagine nihilism does. Instead, absurdism asks what we do after realizing that life may not come with a built-in explanation. The absurdist response is often to recognize the lack of ultimate certainty and still keep living, choosing, loving, working, and laughing.

In literature, drama, and film, absurdism describes works that show life as strange, illogical, repetitive, or darkly comic. Characters may speak past one another, follow pointless routines, or face impossible situations without neat answers. The "Theater of the Absurd," linked with playwrights such as Samuel Beckett and Eugene Ionesco, uses this kind of strangeness to reveal something unsettling about existence.

Absurdism can also be used more casually to describe humor, art, or behavior that is intentionally ridiculous or nonsensical. A comedy sketch about a courtroom trial over a sandwich might be called absurdism if its silliness feels deliberate and exaggerated.

So whether it appears in a philosophy book, a strange play, a bleakly funny novel, or a piece of surreal humor, absurdism points to the uneasy comedy of being human: we keep asking the universe for meaning, even when the answer is silence.
